Dear San Diegans,
Looking forward to a lovely weekend, and the cross-cultural events scene is beginning to heat up.
The two biggest events in San Diego are this Sunday's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade on Harbor Drive, followed by the annual celebration on Monday at the WorldBeat Center. Also on Monday will be the 38th Annual All Peoples Celebration in Balboa Park.
Music and dance events include tonight's Center for World Music's Mbira Bhururu: Songs of the Shona People of Zimbabwe concert at the La Jolla Community Center (remember to use the code "WVP10" for a discount on Tickets), the 2nd Villa-Lobos Festival Concert at the Coronado Library featuring music from Brazil, the ongoing Salsa & Bachata Festival San Diego at the Mission Valley Marriott, Saturday's Persian Music Recital featuring the Setar Students of Kourosh Taghavi at the Iranian American Center, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán at the Civic Theatre on Saturday, and Wild Wild East at the JAI on Sunday. Next Friday, the Trade Roots Reggae 40th Anniversary Show will be held at the Holding Company next Friday, and Luis Angel 'El Flaco' y Julio Preciado will perform at the Civic Theatre.
The 13th Annual Borrego Springs Film Festival continues through the weekend. Tonight (Friday), the film L'Attachement will be shown at the French American School. Friday and Sunday, Christiane F. will screen at the Digital Gym. Saturday, Children of Fire will be shown at the Coronado Library.
Theater options include the weekend performances of a dramatic rendition of The Diary of Anne Frank at Innovations Academy, Saturday and Sunday's performances of Pancho Rabbit & the Coyote at Southwestern College, and next Tuesday's open reading (part 1) of Macbeth at the Coronado Library.
Comedic shows include Monty Python’s Edukational Show ongoing at the Mission Valley Mall, Bobby Lee at the Balboa Theatre (one show tonight and two shows on Saturday), and, next Tuesday and Wednesday, Nimish Patel will perform at the American Comedy Company.
Other notable events include Saturday's virtual talk by Karen Fang about her book Background Artist which chronicles the life of Hollywood luminary Tyrus Wong, next Thursday's talk by Lauren Rossi on Religion as Camouflage? Hidden Children During the Holocaust, and, finally, this Sunday's Flavors and Stories food tour by the Chinese Historical Society.
Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!
